About the hardware:
There's more to it, than just sheetfed-press vs. web-press. |
EXAMPLE: a "full-size" web press, eg, a
Heidelberg/Harris M-1000,
is designed, in general, to
produce
signatures of 16 pages from one roll ("single
web") of paper, or
signatures of 32 pages from two rolls ("double web") of paper. OK-fine, but more than
three hundred M-1000's have been
installed since 1985 and none of
them -- none, not one --
has been
configured, accessorized, so-to-speak, exactly the same as another.
RESULT: One Harris M-1000 (a single-web press ) is optimized to
produce millions of single cut sheets, while another shop's Harris M-1000 (this a double-web press) is optimized
for commercial printing
of (several) 32-page signatures.
The cost-per-page of 32-page signatures produced on the "second" press
is about a third less, a 33% cost difference, comparing two nominally-similar
Harris M-1000's.
About the mind-set: "COMMERCIAL" shop, vs. "PUBLICATION" shop |
EXAMPLE: commercial
printer's
mind-set; museum-quality printing this morning,
(fine porcelain auction). Something different, tomorrow.
|
"commercial"
printing
|
|
vs. |
EXAMPLE: publication printer's mind-set; a
two-day-turnaround
of a
hundred-thousand-copy
128-page magazine is within
the norm: because that's what this shop does,
just exactly the same way, all year.

SO YOUR COSTS, AND YOUR
RESULTS,
from
the right shop (right hardware, right mind-set), and
because of our knowledge of
these, are more dependable results,
and lower costs, than you
would otherwise experience.
